I am sure you have heard of Piano Chords. Well, that can be a little misleading because when you play chords, normally with you left hand, you would play chords on an electronic keyboard or electric organ rather than a piano.
When learning to play the piano you would normally learn, what I call a moving left hand rather than a three note or four-note chord. You can still use chords with a piano but you must put the bass note in first before playing the chord. So if you are playing a C chord you would play the C bass note first with your left hand then the C chord. With an electronic keyboard, you would just play the C chord and the auto-chord feature that most keyboards have will add the bass note for you.
So, for all you keyboard and organ beginners out there all you need to start with is some basic triad and seventh chords. There are hundreds of chords to learn, but guess what; you don’t need to learn them now.
Let me give you an example, if you are playing your favourite song on your keyboard and you come across a chord called C6 or C9 or even C11 what do you do, stop, and learn these chords or carry on playing and learn these chords later, if you want to. Sound confusing, it’s not really, what you do is play a simple C chord instead of the C6, C9 or C11.
When you see a number attached to a chord it means you are adding another note to that chord. So for example C6 means play a C chord and add a sixth to it, and if you don’t know what the sixth is just play the C chord and learn the sixth later.
Now I don’t want to bombard you with theory but there are certain rules when playing ninth and eleventh chords, the rule being you must include the seventh when playing these types of chords. Now, as a beginner you can substitute ninth and eleventh chords with seventh chords. So now, you have a choice, if you see a C9 chord, you can play either a C chord or a C7 chord, both are adequate and both will sound correct.
Here are the chords I recommend beginners learn first.
12 Major Chords
12 Seventh Chords
12 Minor Chords
12 Minor Seventh Chords
The 12 Major Chords are:
C, G, D, A, E, B, F#/Gb, C#/Db, Ab, Eb, Bb, F
The 12 Seventh Chords are:
C7, G7, D7, A7, E7, B7, F#7/Gb7, C#7/Db7, Ab7, Eb7, Bb7, F7
The 12 Minor Chords are:
Cm, Gm, Dm, Am, Em, Bm, F#m/Gbm, C#m/Dbm, Abm, Ebm, Bbm, Fm
The 12 Minor Seventh Chords are:
Cm7, Gm7, Dm7, Am7, Em7, Bm7, F#m7/Gbm7, C#m7/Dbm7, Abm7, Ebm7, Bbm7, Fm7
That’s 48 of the most popular chords used in modern music today. If you learn these chords, you will be able to play hundreds of songs that are widely available in songbooks and sheet music.

Daily Egyptian

For Chris Salter, learning how to play the piano came easy. But learning how to actually read music was not.

This challenge inspired Salter, a 1983 graduate in linguistics and music, to develop Piano Wizard, a video game that taches users to play piano through a color-coded keyboard and on-screen prompts. The game is already being sold by major online retailers and should reach shelves by the end of the year.

While fun and entertaining, Piano Wizard aims at teaching aspiring musicians how to read music through graduated game play.

In the game’s beginner levels, colorful icons or “notes,” such as dinosaur eggs and rocket ships travel on a straight line from the bottom of the screen toward an on-screen keyboard at the top. When the icons reach the keys on the screen, players hit a corresponding colored key on an electronic keyboard, which plugs into the computer.

As the game advances, notes scroll across the screen horizontally, imitating the lines of the staff and the way music is read. Advanced users can import electronic music files and play along to learn scores and arrangements.

“When most kids start playing the piano, they have a 90 percent failure rate, but it’s not the music, it’s the way we teach music,” Salter said. “This kind of takes the torture out of it, takes the abstractness out of learning how to read the musical language.”

Salter said he first thought of inventing the game shortly after graduating from SIUC. He entered the University in 1978 to study cinematography and began producing films about music.

Shortly after, Salter met piano instructor Don Beattie, who came to the School of Music in 1979, and began taking piano lessons with the new faculty member. While Beattie helped Salter learn to play piano before he graduated, Salter said he never mastered reading music.

Then, a few months after graduating in 1983, Salter took keyboarding classes to learn how to type. He said the lessons were frustrating until he played a typing game, and soon he was typing 40 words per minute. It dawned on him that a piano video game could have the same effect.

After years of consideration, Salter decided to form a business to develop and manufacture the game. Allegro Multimedia was born in August 2001; following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the dot-com business bust, finding investors was difficult.

But $3.5 million and a few patents later, Piano Wizard is riding on the popularity of the video game market. Last year alone, video games made for a $12 billion industry.

Salter said CompUSA recently placed a large order to sell the game, and online retail giants, such as target.com and amazon.com, already sell the game. On target.com, the game retails for $109.99.

He also said a major toy manufacturer is looking into developing the game further for sales late next year and an infomercial featuring the game will debut nationally on Wednesday.

Throughout the process, Salter kept his connection with Beattie and with the SIU School of Music.

This fall, with the help of Beattie, and his wife Delayna Beattie, a Piano Wizard academy was founded in conjunction with the School of Music.

Comprising mostly of 4- to 8-year-olds from the Child Development Laboratory, the academy focuses on teaching children to play the piano and read music through playing the game.

Children work with adult mentors from the School of Music, along with Don and Delayna Beattie, to learn simple songs on the game. After practicing the song on an electronic keyboard, children move to actual pianos to apply what they learned.

The academy and its students are featured in the infomercial, and students from the Department of Radio and Television are developing a documentary about the game and the academy.

“It’s a wonderful and extraordinary game that will ultimately help a whole lot of people,” Don Beattie said. “It’s a wonderful starting point that allows them to read a dozen pieces a day and helps them become literate readers of music while still having fun. Music is a language, and this helps increase their vocabulary.”

Last week, 10 children packed the academy’s cozy studio space one afternoon in the Old Baptist Foundation, singing along to “Merrily we roll along,” which they were learning to play on the game.

After stopping for a brief lesson about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and reviewing music notes, the 3- and-4-year-olds ran to the computers set up with the game. Perched on booster seats and sometimes the lap of a mentor, the children played along, getting instant feedback from the game about their timing and tempo.

“I got a 98 percent!” one little girl shouted out before turning back to the screen to tackle the song again, hoping for a perfect score.

“Don and I are firm believers that music is a birthright not reserved for the elite,” Salter said. “It should be open to all, not just those who have access to classical education. Music is something joyful and joins people at a spiritual level, and allowing everyone to have that is a beautiful thing.”

Synthesizer is an instrument that helps to create and play different kinds of sounds. They require external sound boxes. This instrument has different kinds of models. The models vary on the basis of the functions, facilities, size etc.
There are three main types of synthesizers, analogue, digital and software. In the analogue form, continuous voltages in different proportions model sound wave. Whereas in a digital synthesizer various separate information units are used. A software synthesizer makes use of various software to mix sounds.
By assimilating these three types, a new kind of synthesizer is made, which is called hybrid synthesizer.
There are different methods of synthesis.
- Subtractive synthesis
- Granular synthesis
- Physical modeling synthesis
- Frequency modulation synthesis
- Phase distortion synthesis
- Additive synthesis
- Sample based synthesis
- Sub harmonic synthesis
Elisha Gray invented the first electronic synthesizer in the year 1876. After this a lot more experiments occurred with the synthesizer and hence different kinds of synthesizers were invented.
Microtonal Electronic keyboard was made by Ivor Darreg in 1937, ANS synthesizer by Russian scientist Evgeny Murzin. Only one ANS was made. Presently it is preserved at the Lomonosov university of Moscow.
In the 1960s, development of synthesizers took place. But they were so big in size that they had to be kept inside the studios only.
Today synthesizers have become digital. They are lot more advanced than the previous ones. Now it is possible to arrange a whole song in synthesizer. You don’t need any acoustic instruments. Synthesizers will provide you all these acoustic effects. You can also have different sound effect like, the sound of a moving train, people talking, sound of applauses etc.
You can even record or create new sound effects. Synthesizer is becoming popular in the music industry. Synthesized music is slowly emerging. Even films are using synthesized songs. The first song to be fully synthesized was from the James bond flick, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, in 1969.
After this film, using synthesized music became a trend for films. In the year 1982, John Carpenter made a film called ‘The Thing’, which had all synthesized songs.
Modern synthesizers give you many other facilities also. You can play and can record what you have just played instantly. How? Simple. Record it in a floppy or C.D. It has got the floppy and c.d. drive.
Modern synthesizers have a huge option of sound balancing too. You can balance your sound on your own and can settle down with the kind of sound you want.
As it is capable of delivering various sound effects, you can easily get the instrument you want. Like you want to play saxophone. But you don’t know how to play saxophone. With a synthesizer around you don’t even need to know. Just switch on the synthesizer, chose the saxophone option and go on playing saxophone in the synthesizer rid.
Sounds interesting, right? If you seriously want to be musically versatile, then this is the right choice for you. But remember, good quality synthesizers are a bit expensive. But nothing can beat the love and passion for great music.

Synthesizers are electronic instruments, which are capable of delivering a varied range of sounds. Synthesizers are of different types. Synthesizers have changed its look with time. Vintage synthesizers were far more different from the modern synthesizers. Synthesizers of old times were big and they did not offer so many facilities like today.
Elisa Gray invented the first synthesizer in 1876. It was called the musical telegraph at that time. The invention of this instrument happened accidentally. Elisa Grey was also the inventor of telephone. He used a telephone technology to invent this instrument.
Once he suddenly discovered that sound can be controlled from a self-vibrating electromagnetic circuit. And from this he invented a single note oscillator.
After this some other synthesizers were also invented. The vintage synthesizers derived their technology from the early musical instruments, analogue computer and some laboratory test instrument.
In 1937 Ivor Darreg created one microtonal electronic keyboard oboe. After this Evgeny Murzin created an ANS synthesizer. A big Mark 2 Music Synthesizer was invented in 1958. It was kept at the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music center located in New York. The paradox with this synthesizer was it could only be played after preparing the full programming of the machine. There was a vacuum tube system. It had to be manually used, while creating any kind of new sound.
In 1958 Daphne Oram too made a synthesizer. It was made at BBC radio phonic Workshop. She used a technique called Oramics technique to make this instrument. BBC used this synthesizer for several years.
In the late 1940s and early 50s different automated music controllers were invented. Raymond Scott, John Hanert, Hugh Le Caine and some others invented these kinds of controllers.
By 1960, modified synthesizers were invented. They could be played at real time. But they were so big that they had to be confined inside the sound studio. Vintage synthesizers were basically made of modular devices. They were not as much updated as the modern synthesizers. They did not have many features. They normally had the piano tone. Some other tones were also available, but there were not much of them.
Vintage synthesizers were very experimental. Actually they were devices, which were made specially. The mechanics were very much dependent on the concept of modularity. Robert Moog invented a synthesizer, which was a big hit at that time. This synthesizer was very much useful for the pop musicians. The best thing about this instrument was that it was smaller than the previous ones and it looked more like an instrument than a machine.
Micky Dolenz of the band The Monkees was the first one to buy this synthesizer. They used this instrument in their fourth album, which was called Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd. This album was released in 1967. This was the first album that featured a synthesizer. The instrument became an instant hit after the release of this album.
As time moved on new experiment started taking place on synthesizers. And as a result, their new models were made. These modern ones are far more upgraded than the older ones. But we shall not forget that the vintage synthesizers were the first that paved the way to these new ones. And for that reason, we shall always remember them.

Figuring out the best possible brand of piano to purchase for a player that is just beginning can be a pretty difficult task depending on the particular situation. No one can come right out and tell you what piano to buy, it’s a decision that you must work your way to with a good bit of research.
There are a number of questions that you should ask yourself before jumping into a purchase that may be as major as buying a piano.
Has the beginner ever played before?
If the beginner that you are considering buying a piano for has never so much as played the instrument before and there is no one else residing in the house that will play, some serious thought should be put into the decision. In fact, if this is a situation that you are currently facing, it might be advisable, if possible, for the beginner to take a few lessons at a studio or to purchase a less expensive, electronic keyboard to begin with to be sure that the beginner will hold some interest in the endeavor after the initial novelty begins to wear off.
The last thing you want to do is go out and spend more that twenty thousand dollars on a very large instrument that will take up quite a bit of space in your home only to find that there is no real deep interest there. A keyboard is a good, inexpensive and portable learning tool that will help you gage if there is a real interest there, and it will still be of use later down the road after a full size piano is procured.
What fits my situation?
If you are sure that purchasing a piano is the right decision, then you’ve got some serious studying to do.
In all reality, the best brand of piano for your beginner is going to be the one that fits your particular situation, in terms of price, size and sound quality.
There are plenty of excellent manufacturers of pianos available in every imaginable style and price range: Steinway, Wurlitzer, Kawai and Yamaha each have different musical quality and each manufacturer comes with a potentially very different price tag (Steinway produces pianos that are well in excess of six figures, where as Yamaha produces a quality instrument for under twenty thousand dollars.) Each brand will have a style, sound and price that will appeal to different types of players.
Pianos come in two different “body types”, uprights and grand pianos. Grand pianos normally produce a better sound quality, but uprights are often far less expensive and easier to fit into your home.
You’ll want to visit plenty of show rooms, do a lot of testing out different brands and talking to a good deal of sales people, teachers and technicians in order to narrow down the possibilities and begin to select the piano that may be right for you. You want a brand that has good merit, a solid reputation and that offers a good warranty.
Once you’ve got a manufacturer in mind that you feel comfortable with, it’s time to pick the most appropriate model for your situation – if at all possible, try not to buy the manufacturer’s least expensive model. It’s no secret that the cheapest model in terms of cost is probably the manufacturer’s model that is also of the lowest quality, a few hundred to one thousand dollars price difference could mean a world in the difference of quality of the instrument.
Don’t despair that you can’t afford the world’s greatest piano right from the beginning, many reputable manufacturers have a “trade up” option that will allow you to upgrade to a better model when you feel that you may have outgrown your current piano.
When it comes to buying a piano, as with making any other major purchase you want to be armed with information – ask a lot of questions and buy what you can afford. Pick a manufacturer that has a trade up option so you’ll always be able to have the best possible piano for your situation.

Synthesizers are electronic, keyboard-based instruments that produce artificial, or synthesized, sounds. Many frequently mistake synthesizers for simply portable, electronic pianos, but the differences are extremely vast. While synthesizers can definitely produce a piano sound, their main purpose, usually, is to create sounds not specifically found on any other instrument.
The process of creating these sounds is sometimes very difficult; while some synthesizers come with pre-created sounds, or patches, many come with a clean slate. The synthesizers produce sounds by a series of dials and knobs dedicated to a variety of aspects: oscillation, modulation, sustain, delay and attack, just to name a few. Some synthesizers even create sounds based on a patch bay.
Remember old telephone operators that patched calls through based on cords and inputs? Some synthesizers use the same principle (and are generally used by those with an extremely advanced knowledge of their workings). And what’s more, many older synthesizers don’t offer the option of saving the sounds created; instead, the user has to keep detailed records of dial and knob placement, being careful to catch every nuance. To recreate a sound on these synthesizers is to keep very meticulous notes.
Synthesizers made their break into popular music during the 1970s and 80s when numerous progressive rock bands began using them to create cosmic, unfamiliar sounds. However, devices from different manufacturers were generally not compatible with each other and could not be interconnected, so eventually a digital standard for musical instruments called “midi” was born. Midi is an acronym for musical instrument digital interface.
Midi allowed synthesizers made by different companies to communicate with each other, which was a huge breakthrough and was responsible for the explosion of synthesizer use. One of the first synthesizers was a “Moog”. I remember meeting Bob Moog back in the 70’s at NAMN – a trade show in Anaheim across the street from Disneyland. More than any other person, Moog had created the first useable and affordable synthesizer. Soon companies such as Roland and Yamaha with deeper pockets came out with more affordable models. I think I bought my first synth in about 1980 – a Roland that I used for probably 10 years before moving on to something more current.
The use of synthesizers quickly developed into an entirely new genre of music, electronic music, headed by such veterans as Kraftwerk (who, by the way, are still massively popular). They eventually found their way into almost every branch of 1980s popular music — which is probably why they fell so far out of favor. Synthesizers in the mainstream music industry quickly became associated with 1980s bubblegum pop, the very thing that new rock and punk bands were railing against. And even while an electronic music scene thrived (and even revolutionized), synthesizers became known as the outdated kiss of death for popular, mass-audience intended music.
The late 90s, however, saw a resurgence in the use of synthesizers among underground rock and punk bands (ironically enough) and have quickly become re-embraced by the popular music industry.

Electronic pianos are keyboard instruments are designed so they can simulate the timbre of an acoustic piano by using an electronic circuit. Pianos were widely used musical instruments in the old days. Almost every house had a piano. Pianos were the most popular musical instruments all through the 18th century and even after that. It was as late as the 20th century that the use of the electronic pianos came into existence. Electronic pianos were widely used and now, there are many used electronic pianos available for sale. The best part of the electronic piano is that they do not require tuning. The traditional pianos had to be tuned from time to time so that the sound quality remained the best.Used electronic pianos do not have to be tuned and hence they can be used as is. The used electronic pianos will be available in all the shops that sell musical instruments. But before you buy used electronic pianos make sure that you know what you want, like size, colour, weighted keys. Just do a bit of homework first. If you feel that you are a beginner and do not know much about pianos then it will always be better to take somebody with you who will be able to identify a used electronic piano as a good one. The advantage of buying used electronic pianos is that you do not have to pay the original price and you can save a lot of money.Beginners can start with a used electronic piano, and later, when you become an expert you can always get a new piano for yourself. You can also find used electronic pianos on the internet; there are many websites that will give great offers on used pianos. Just use the same kind of common sense you would on the high street and you could well pick up an incredible deal, and there’s a lot out there, you just have to find them.

If you are thinking of learning to play the piano, you may well want to start out with an electronic keyboard. They are generally much cheaper than a real acoustic piano and have options like percussion rhythms or instrument sounds. However, if you intend to have piano lessons your piano teacher will probably want you to have an acoustic piano at home to practice on. All the same, an electronic keyboard can give you hours of fun and if you want to progress to an acoustic piano you can do that later, when you think you will be able to play.

Most experts recommend that you buy an electronic keyboard with at least 61 keys so that you can play more traditional music. A good option is a piano keyboard with a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) sometimes known as a USB Keyboard, which can communicate with your computer and other electronic instruments. The USB keyboard is a less expensive option and have no built in sound so can only be used with a computer. It is expert opinion that even the lowest priced piano keyboards perform better than the USB keyboard which loses some sound quality.

Digital Pianos sound closer to the true acoustic piano but they are much more expensive and more suited to experienced players. Digital Pianos are great for professional musicians who travel around and need a portable piano. They also have the ability to reproduce many other sounds as well as piano. Musicians like the fact that they can produce rhythm patterns, bass lines, acoustic and electronic instruments, and percussion sounds, along with all the digital effects like reverb, delay, distortion and chorus.

It really does depend on what type of musician you are when it comes to choosing a keyboard. You might be a DJ wanting to add in some more musical effects or you might want to learn to play without the expense of a full size piano. You may well be a touring musician. The only true restriction is how much you want to spend. Prices start at under £100 and rise to over£3000.
